I D Cards
The issue: Dear Sir George

I am writing to express my views and to ask for advice. I feel very angry regarding the Governments continued push towards introducing ID cards in the UK. This feels to me to be an issue of my liberties and basic freedoms as well as a move towards greater control of the people. Once we have to carry an ID card, the next step is the right for the Police to stop and ask to see ID, whatever we are doing. Our right to free movement in our country is lost, the government can monitor our movements, without needing to request for court approval. At least this issue should be the subject of a referendum!

On the topic of referendum, I am also very angry regarding the government breaking their pledge to call a referendum on the EU Charter.

My question is as follows:

I am thinking of establishing a web site for political challenge and action, so views can be posted, comments made, petitions opened etc. Are there any legal issues I should know of before going ahead.

Warmly
John Parr

My response:
Dear Mr Parr

Many thanks for the email. I share your disappointment that the Government has gone back on its commitment to hold a referendum before ratifying the Lisbon Treaty.
I voted for the amendment on Wednesday.
There will be an opportunity to vote against ID Cards, as the government have said it will not be compulsory until after the next election – in practice, the time table has slipped into the following parliament.
On websites, I am not a lawyer, but there are many blogs and websites which host political discussion. They should avoid carrying anything defamatory or libellous, or which incites racial hatred. I suggest you ask around before proceeding.

Best wishes, George Young
