Andover War Memorial hospital
The issue: I read "Be proud of your hospital" in todays Andover Advertiser with increasing amazement at the - in my view- over the top reference to the Surgeons & anaesthetists flown in from South Africa every two weeks for the past few months to spearhead the renewed surgical service. Where are our own home trained Uk based equivalents? I just cannot fathom the justification for such an expensive decision. What on earth is happening to this country, & indeed where has all the huge investment made by the Gouvernment to the NHS been directed? Let me guess, additional layers of so called management, with all the necessary gold plated perks. I just hope Brown & his cronies are told by Cameron to "Go for gods sake go".
Date Issue Raised: 02 May 2008
My response: Many thanks for the email. I was delighted that general anaesthetic surgery has been recommenced at Andover Hospital, thereby reducing the need to travel to Winchester. I have consistently campaigned for a rebalancing between Winchester and Andover, as the Andover population overtakes that of Winchester. We need more investment in Andover so that the doctors no longer find it “quaint”!
I will pursue with management the reasons for the use of South African surgeons, and let you know how I get on.

Best wishes, George Young
