Dear Sir George, I understand that the new expense system is going to cost £6-£7m to run, salaries in excess of £100,000 and 80 strong workforce. I cannot believe this can be correct, no commercial company would have such a department to administer 600 plus workers. In fact my old company in the city, about 2000 people had a small section of no more than 6.The well used phrase "they don't get it" continues, this is just wasting our money. There is so much waste in government but this latest idea just tipped me over the edge. Yours sincerely

Many thanks for the email and of course I understand your exasperation.
The figure of £6 to £7m includes the start-up costs for IPSA, which are non-recurrent. Sir Ian Kennedy insists that the IPSA running costs will be less than those of the Fees office which it replaces.
IPSA will be paying MP’s staff, and running a scheme for accommodating about 550 MP’s so it is a slightly different operation from a normal payroll one.
Best wishes, George Young
